Manchester United are scheduled to play against Everton after the international break with Ruben Amorim hoping to keep the club’s unbeaten streak alive

Manchester United are set to face Everton following the international break. Ruben Amorim’s squad hasn’t suffered a Premier League defeat since late September.

Initially it seemed as though Amorim’s tenure in Manchester was on shaky ground this season but an impressive turnaround now sees his team just six points shy of second place. A number of players are currently representing their respective countries but will return later this week to prepare for the clash with the Toffees.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes has been shining for Portugal and helped his nation secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup on Sunday evening with a 9-1 rout of Armenia. Fernandes took on an advanced role during the match, sending a clear message to his club coach with his performance.

Bruno Fernandes makes statement with hat-trick

In Portugal’s 9-1 victory, Fernandes netted three goals. Manager Roberto Martinez deployed Fernandes as an attacking midfielder in a trio with two more defensive players supporting him.

Under Amorim, he hasn’t been playing in such an advanced role, instead undertaking more defensive duties as part of a midfield duo alongside either Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte.

Fernandes excelled in a more advanced role for his country, scoring two goals from the penalty spot and one from open play as well as providing an assist in a standout performance.

The 31-year-old has previously thrived in a more attacking midfield position under other United managers, but with players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo occupying wide roles, Amorim’s formation doesn’t seem to accommodate such a role. Nonetheless, Fernandes’ performance sent a clear message.

Ruben Amorim is set for a midfield boost

United strengthened their attack over the summer with the acquisitions of Mbeumo and Cunha, along with Benjamin Sesko. Now it appears their midfield is next in line for a revamp.

ESPN suggests that the club is eyeing several midfield talents, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller.

To fund these potential new signings it’s reported that the club may offload some of their highest earners. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are among the names mentioned in the report.

Rashford, who is currently on loan at Barcelona, earns £325,000 per week at Old Trafford. Casemiro and Harry Maguire could also be on their way out unless they agree to significantly reduced wages.

Conor Gallagher addresses transfer rumours

Former Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, now with Atletico Madrid, has also been mentioned as a potential midfield target. Despite a promising start after his move to the Spanish side in the summer of 2024 he’s struggled for game time this season.

In September there were reports that United might attempt a last-minute loan deal for Gallagher before the transfer window closed but this didn’t come to fruition. Now, Gallagher has spoken out about his limited playing time and the transfer speculation.

Speaking to AS, he said: “I’m not satisfied. I don’t think anyone would be if they don’t play as much as they would like but I will continue to work very hard to, whenever I have the opportunity, help the team and hopefully more opportunities will come to be a starter.”

Gallagher went on to say: “I’m very happy here. My goal is to win titles with Atleti, and I want to have a bigger role in the team. And, as I said, I’m going to continue working to the maximum to play more minutes and be able to help the team.”
