Ruben Amorim sends message to team as star is told he has no future at club

Ruben Amorim has already analysed where Manchester United must improve ahead of their impending return to Premier League football. Currently on a five-match unbeaten streak, United host Everton on Monday with a win potentially placing them in the Champions League places.

With a feel-good atmosphere surrounding Old Trafford for the first time since the Portuguese manager’s arrival last November, he publicly revealed the issue that he must solve in order to prolong their positive run.

Andre Onana verdict

Andre Onana has played just one game for United this season – their shock loss to Grimsby Town – before joining Trabzonspor on loan in September. With Senne Lammens impressing between the sticks, former United favourite Gordon Strachan believes the Cameroonian’s Old Trafford career is all but over.

The Scotsman told Esports News: “I think Andre Onana has played his last game for Manchester United. At United you must have a presence in goal – whether it’s physical, attitude, or character, you have to be a presence. I don’t think he had that when he played for the club.

“A big problem for me is that I’m not sure Onana really wanted to be at Old Trafford. He looked like he’d rather be somewhere else and that might be what he needs to start enjoying his football again.

“At no point did I think he was enjoying playing football for United. I’d be shocked if I saw him play again for the club. I think his United career is over in that respect.”

Amorim’s clear stance

Despite being on his longest unbeaten run since arriving in Manchester last year, Amorim still has a bone to pick with his team. A vibrant first half performance followed by an insipid showing in the next 45 minutes has been something of a theme for the Red Devils.

Topsy-turvy games against Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur has led Amorim to believe his squad’s mindset must improve when they are leading matches. After being asked why the drop-off in games exists, he told the Premier League: “I think we lose intensity.

“I think we have some problems in two games that we lost, we lose Casemiro with some pain, Harry Maguire the same thing, and they are key players not just the way they play and the experience they have, the set pieces and people don’t take that into consideration.

“I think when we are in advantage, we lose that thing of wanting to continue to press in the same way. We had that against Brighton until we suffered the first goal. So it’s a lot of things together.

“We think about ‘let’s not suffer a goal’ and our mindset should be ‘we have one goal, we must get another and have the opportunity to kill the game’. So it is mental but it is also physical, we need to improve in that aspect also.”
