Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is disrespecting Kobbie Mainoo by refusing to give him an opportunity to play, after leaving him out of the team against Sunderland.

The Red Devils claimed a vital win at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon as Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko scored in the first-half to earn a 2-0 victory, with many describing it as the best performance from his team this season.

But conspicuous by his absence once again was academy star Mainoo, who was once again left on the bench as he awaits his first Premier League start of the campaign despite the team’s poor start.

The victory over Sunderland was just the third of the season for Man Utd, following a 3-2 injury-time win over newly-promoted Burnley and a hard-fought 2-1 win over Chelsea, who had 10 men for almost the entire game following Robert Sanchez’s red card in the third minute.

The manager made five changes to his lineup from the defeat to Brentford last weekend, with Senne Lammens making his debut in goal, while Leny Yoro, Amad, Casemiro, and Mason Mount also came into the side in place of Harry Maguire, Patrick Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte and Matheus Cunha.

Amorim’s explanation for the changes was a mixture of squad rotation, giving players a chance and picking the right team for the game to against Sunderland’s characteristics. Yet, somehow, Mainoo was resigned to the substitutes bench once again.

Things got even worse when, at 2-0 up and cruising, Amorim made two changes by bringing in Dorgu and Cunha for Mount and Dalot, once again overlooking Mainoo and any chance of him making an impact or meaningful contribution.

Mainoo asked to leave the club on loan in the summer to play more regularly as he eyed a World Cup spot, but he was denied that request and told to fight for his place. But how can he fight for his place if he’s competing with someone in Bruno Fernandes who is never dropped, rested or substituted regardless of his form, and he can only get pity minutes when he is called upon?

Eventually, the England international came on to the pitch with 15 minutes remaining in place of Bryan Mbeumo and didn’t put a foot wrong. But Amorim would have learnt nothing in that time, with the game all but fizzling out and United staying patient to keep their three points.

Nicky Butt recently said that Mainoo “has not been respected the way he should be”, and this was just another example of Amorim disrespecting the 20-year-old, who has the talent and quality to be the future of the club
