Manchester United have reportedly identified an “incredible” manager with three league titles to his name as a potential successor to Ruben Amorim.
Amorim under pressure despite Chelsea win
While Amorim temporarily eased some of the pressure with a 2-1 home victory over Chelsea at the weekend, serious doubts continue to surround his future at Old Trafford. The 40-year-old’s overall performance as United boss has been underwhelming, and criticism is mounting.
Former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott questioned Amorim’s in-game decisions, particularly the decision to substitute centre-backs during the match. “My centre-halves at Arsenal never got changed. Or at Arsenal now — centre-halves do not get changed,” Walcott said. “Wingers get changed, which is annoying. I always used to get subbed and thought, ‘Okay, I’ve done my job.’ It was generally the pattern. [But] centre-halves? Don’t change that. It’s too dangerous for me.”
Looking ahead, United face seemingly favourable fixtures against Brentford and Sunderland. However, with scrutiny intensifying, it remains uncertain how much longer Amorim will remain in charge.
Man United eye Marco Silva as potential Amorim successor
According to Football Insider, Manchester United’s hierarchy are already planning for the possibility of parting ways with Ruben Amorim, and have identified Fulham boss Marco Silva as a potential replacement.
Silva is reportedly growing frustrated with Fulham’s lack of ambition, which could pave the way for a move to Old Trafford — though he isn’t the only name under consideration.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola are also on INEOS’ three-man shortlist, as contingency plans are being put in place should United’s results fail to improve.
“Incredible” Silva tipped for bigger job
Silva, who took over at Fulham in July 2021, is currently the third-longest serving manager in the Premier League. He’s widely credited with revitalising the club — first leading them to promotion and then securing their top-flight status.
His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. During the 2023/24 season, former pro Stephen Warnock hailed the 48-year-old for the “incredible” job he’s done at Craven Cottage, suggesting he’s earned a step up to a bigger club.
Silva’s success hasn’t been limited to Fulham — the Portuguese manager also lifted the Greek Super League title with Olympiacos and guided GD Estoril Praia to promotion by winning Portugal’s second division, adding to his Championship triumph in England.
With three league titles under his belt and a preference for the 4-2-3-1 formation, Silva has built a strong case for a move to a top-tier club. If Manchester United decide to part ways with Amorim, he could emerge as a compelling candidate.
